Gilchrist County

Organized in 1925 from the western part of Alachua, it is the last county to be formed in the state. named after the state’s governor from 1909 to 1913, Albert W. Gilchrist. The county has a number of historic buildings. Bell is a small town that was named after a beauty contest winner. Trenton is the county seat. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,939.

Wannee: was a small town in the late 1800s located at the west end of the Seaboard Coast Railroad. Was an old logging town. The railroad originated in Starke, went through Alachua and Bell before ending in Wannee, usually making the round trip once a day with a train named "Peggy." This was the first railroad in the area. The railroad was taken up in 1936. Wannee now serves as a residential community for those who want to live off the beaten path and there is now a public boat ramp near the old hotel and railroad yard location. You can still plainly see the remnants of the old dock, below. Wanee is also the location Marilyn Monroe picked to build a vacation home so that she would be close to visit with her mother. In Marilyn's Trust, (separate of her will), she left the land to her mother Gladys Pearl Ely (Baker). Gladys Ely had a Trust as well, where by all is referenced, showing the land transfer from the Estate of Marilyn Monroe to Gladys Pearl Ely (Baker).

Waters Lake The elevation of Waters Lake is 82 feet, 5 miles south of Craggs, just east of State Road 47.

Wilcox is an unincorporated community in Gilchrist County, Florida. It is located about 1 mile west of Lottieville, at the bend in State Road 26.

Wilcox Junction is an unincorporated community in Gilchrist County, Florida, United States. It is located 1.4 miles west of Wilcox, and 1.4 miles northwest of Fanning Springs.

Williford was a siding of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in Gilchrist County, Florida. It was located approximately 5 miles northeast of Bell, and 2 miles west of Craggs.

A Home Speaks

I stand here now out in the field, Was here when times were hard, The livestock then were all fenced out And trees were in the yard. I used to be all painted white, Before collapse, debris, There used to be an old rope swing Out underneath the tree. I watched as men out in the field Would farm in heat and cold, I watched as families came and left, I watched as men grew old. I sat here winters and thru springs, I tried to keep my pride, For I have stood here many years Without a soul inside. I cringed as they came for my trees, To me it made no sence, Azaleas, myrtles, all came out, They pulled down my old fence. No one has come for many years, At least not thru my door. I’m slowly having to let go Of walls, of roof and floor. Though wild flowers come each year, They blossom, then they fade, It makes me think of old rope swing, Way back when I had shade. New bushes sprouted at my side, I watched them start, begin, But now the trailing vines have grown Up walls and entered in. I think back now thru all the years, To when I had my pride, I had some trees, I had some souls And had a swing outside.
